Late Motherhood
December 1, 2008
There have always been various stories circulating about late motherhood and the effects of having a child later on in life, although most reports have tended to lean towards the benefits of not waiting too long to have children. Babies borne to a mother over forty had an increased risk of being born with Down syndrome, and according to the Down’s Syndrome Association the number of births has now risen. They have said that this is due to the increasing readiness of parent’s to have a child with the condition, and the belief that the child would have a positive future.
The Down syndrome birth registry believes that the recent figures suggest a different story. They argue that the amount of abortions for a foetus affected with Down’s remains the same. They believe that the increased number in births of babies with Down’s syndrome has nothing to do with parents being more willing to have the child, but with an increase in the number of older women having a baby. Down syndrome is the most common abnormality to a baby borne to a mother over the age of forty-five. Doctors are again warning about delaying having children, and saying it is best to not wait too long. In the latest survey, doctors are saying that leaving it till you are forty defies nature, and that it increases the risk of heartache.
